- Alex's father has abused him since a very young age, causing him to fall into a deep depression. Things got worse after his mother gave up on everything and stopped being a mother.

- Alex uses writing as an escape from his depression and negative thoughts about himself.

- Alex meets Katie and feels comfortable around her and realizes they have a lot in common. He doesn't usually like talking to people or making friends but when he saw her scars he feels like she understands him better than anyone else.

- I'm so sorry that's happening to you. You are welcome to stay here with me whenever you want to get away from your dad.
