This was a very significant part in leading up to the climax because it was the final thing Gatsby needed to see to actually feel that Daisy and Tom were really together. It had Gatsby very shocked and sad and was very unexpected. I feel like it also shows that everything Gatsby had planned was now ruined for good.
The hottest day symbolizes the rising tension between everyone and helps rise to the climax and starts being bad from here and continues onto the car ride to the city. It also shows how uncomfortable they were with each other and the hotness just adds to that uncomfortableness.
Tom finding out Myrtle is dead is a huge part rising up to the climax, Myrtle got hit by Daisy and Gatsby driving Gatsby's car, but the way out of town Tom was driving this car so that's why Myrtle was in the middle of the road. This is significant because Tom thinks he knows exactly that Gatsby was the one who hit Myrtle.
