- Then the father said to him:
- Son, you are always with me, and everything that belongs to me is yours. It was appropriate to celebrate and be glad, for your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost and is found!
- He then lived a reckless life, spending everything until a severe famine took place in that country, and he began to be in need.
- He felt the urge to eat one dayat work while feeding carob pods to the pigs. When no one offered him anything, he came to his senses and said:
- How many of my father’s hired workers have food enough to spare, but here I am dying from hunger!
- I will go home and talk to my father.
- Father, I have sinned against heaven and you; I am no longer worthy of being called your son!
- His father rushed towards him, seeing his son still a long way from home. He hugged and kissed him, then his son said:
- However, the father told his servants:
- Hurry! Bring the best robe, and put it on him! Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet! Bring the fattened calf and kill it! Let us eat and celebrate because this son of mine was dead and is alive again – he was lost and is found!
- And they began to rejoice.
- Now his oldest son was out in the field, and he heard music and dancing as he approached the house. So, he called one of the servants and asked what was going on. The servant replied:
- Your brother has returned, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he got his son back safe and sound.
