Abraham Lincoln was the political leader of the north during the Civil War. He was a Republican from Illinois, and he opposed the expansion of slavery. He was also the 16th President of the United States.
Advantage - Population
Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman were two of the four military leaders for the Union. They used different tactics and supplies to fight their battle. They were also helped by George Meade and George B. McClellan.
Disadvantage - Farms
The strategy used by the Union was called the Anaconda Plan. This was put forth by Winfield Scott, and was meant to surround and suffocate the south. It would halt trade out of the United States and isolate the south to capture their capital.
Advantage - Transportation
One advantage that the Union had over the Confederacy was numbers. The north has about double the population that the south had. These people helped in raising the army and supported the war efforts.
A disadvantage to the Union was their lack of farms. The north was mostly industrial, so they were able to produce their own clothes and weapons. The south did had farms, though, and could grow their own food. The north did not have as many agricultural benefits as the south.
Another advantage the Union had over Confederacy was their transportation. The south did have a railway, but very few that were easily disrupted. The north had 72% of the nations railroad tracks, helping them travel more efficiently.
