- Due to the Seljuk Turks coming within 100 miles of Constantinople, the emperor of the time, Alexius I pleaded to the pope for help. In response the pope called for a Crusade.

- After killing most of the people who fought against them the majority or Crusaders returned home though some stayed and created Crusader kingdoms.

- Salah al-Din was a powerful sultan who took back Palestine and Jerusalem for the Muslims. Richard I led the Crusade and took back Acre.

- Thousands of young peasants from France and Germany marched in a Children's Crusade. Some made it to Jerusalem, others sold into slavery.
