Wouldn't it be so cool if we could float on Earth, Matt?
Well, there is this little thing called gravity, Shaun
Huh? What is gravity?
Matt: Gravity is the pull from Earth that keeps things from going into space. This gravitational force makes a rock on the dirt stay on the dirt. The rock stays on the dirt because it is smaller and has less mass than the Earth, so it has a smaller force of gravity than the Earth.
Matt: The famous mathematician and physicist, Sir Isaac Newton, also created the law of universal gravitation. The law states that every single object in the universe can attract to every other object with a gravitational force.Shaun: Wait, so a burger and a pen can attract using gravitational force?Matt: They sure can
Matt: However, the amount of gravitational force does depend on the distance and mass of the objects. For example, a volleyball and a cup that are two meters apart have a stronger gravitational force than a card and a headset that are 20 meters apart. Also, two trophies that each have a mass of 7 newtons have a stronger gravitational pull than two pillows that each have a mass of 4 newtons
Now do you understand what gravity is?
Yeah! Gravity is the Earth's pull to keep things down. Every object can attract to every other object with a gravitational force, but the strength of the force depends on the distance and mass of both objects
