- so people fled to the island of Taiwan and set up a Nationalist government
- on Mainland China, it is ruled by communists, then in the 1950's the communists set up an unlimited government, which they took control over businesses, and industries
- on the island of Taiwan, they had a Nationalist government, later called the Republic of China. Taiwan similarly to a communist government, had limits on citizen's rights, but that was later changed for the freedom of speech by 1970.
- during the Cultural Revolution, people that like doctors, and teachers were ordered to work on a farm, kids were also taken from school to work, Mao wanted to get rid of anything that wasn't representing communism

- the program failed however, it had poor planning, natural disasters, and a drop in food production

- After the death of Mao, communist leaders took away some of economic controls. People could now own small businesses for money. Some Chinese people wanted a democratic government with freedoms of speech, religion, and the press. Knowing the Communist leaders would stay in charge, they made protests
