- Around the year 400 B.C. Democritus, a Greek philosopher, proposed that all matter was composed of various types of tiny discrete particles, and that the properties of these particles also determined the properties of matter. He proposed that all material bodies are composed of indistinguishably small "atoms."

- In 1803 John Dalton presented his ideas. He developed an atomic theory that proposed that all matter was made up of indivisible and indestructible atoms with different masses and properties, the combination of which determined the physical nature of their constituent elements.

- When I was experimenting, I discovered electrons and it is one of the most important discoveries I did in the history of physics.
- J.J. Thompsom discovered electrons in 1897 and isotopes in 1913. In 1904 he also created a Plum Pudding model with negatively charged electrons embedded within a positively charged "soup."
