I was not overly familiar with digital reading programs. In fact, m y preference is a physical book. However, I had to move beyond my own preferences and become comfortable with digital platforms and recognize their usefulness for the benefit of my students. I am still a work in progress as I learn how to assess the best digital stories to be used to teach my target standard.
My students are not intimidated at all by electronics! They are used to being entertained so I have to find materials that engage them. This includes digital materials with sounds, movement and interaction. If my students become engaged , the better the odds are of their learning!
Books are the doorway to other worlds and educational opportunities. Whatever the format, books shed light!
But as a book, I have to be carefully selected. Online programs don't necessarily offer the correct suggested reading levels. Teachers have to read the books and make their own assessment about which book is best!
The school is the context where books are used but the school is much more than the school! We must address the total needs of the student. This includes finding relevant materials that pique the students' interest and that is relevant to their lives.
The task can be daunting. It is a lot of work to find digital resources, check their validity, plan a scaffolded lesson and meet the other needs of our students. But thank God it is possible! We can do all things through Christ who gives us strength!
