- Ralph blew the conch and everyone crowded around. He used this to get everyone together to discuss issues. "We'ere on an uninhabited island with no other people on it" Ralph explained. (Golding, 31)
- "There's pigs. There's food; and bathing water..." Jack preached (Golding, 35), this was the start of him trying to gain power on the island and he showed his large interest in getting pigs.
- "A snake thing ever so big. He saw it." Piggy interpreted to the others for the young boy with a birthmark who claimed to have seen a snake like object. (Golding, 37)
- "We must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire" Announced Ralph. He was acting like a leader and knew they would never be rescued if they didn't make it obvious people were stuck on the island. (Golding, 40)
- "My specs! Give me my specs!"Piggy howled when the boys used his glasses to make a fire (Golding, 43)
- "I've been watching the sea. There hasn't been a trace of a ship. Perhaps we'll never be rescued." Rodger said giving up hopes of being rescued very early on. (Golding, 47)
