As they talk for longer she finds out so many new things about her grandmother, exactly as she hoped. She learned that Gemma did not marry Josef, but they were friends and they did spend a good chunk of time together, and that her real name was Gitl Mandlestein. Josef also spoke to Rebecca about why Gemma would claim she was a princess. Then rather than telling her all the rest he decided to show her. So he took Rebececca to the place where they met.

Josef started speaking more about Gemma and his experience in a concentration camp. He said that they saved each other, and she was something really special. Josef told them about how he was part of an underground group of jews called the partisans, and their leader was a man called The Avenger. They were staked out near a hole they found that people who exited the gas chambers were dumped into. When the bodies were dumped, The Avenger notices that a woman with red hair (Gemma) is still alive and faintly breathing. Josef revives her with CPR, which the woman, (who is later called, księżniczka which means 'princess' in Polish) refers to in her fairytale as "the kiss of life". Which is where she got the whole “I am a princess” thing.
They said their goodbyes and thank you's. Rebecca finally felt content with her grandmothers past, and was ready to go home.
