Chandragupta Maurya was born 340 BC in Pataliputra. He was the father of Bindsara and grandfather of Ashoka, founded the Mauryan empire 2300 years ago.
Chandragupta received education in military tactics and the aesthetic arts in Taxila (now in Pakistan). He was mentored by Chanakya or Kautilya. Chandragupta was supported by Chanakya who helped him to built the Mauryan empire.
Chandragupta overthrow the Nanda dynasty and then ascended to the throne of the Magadha kingdom, in present-day Bihar state, India, about 325 BCE. Alexander the great died in 323, leaving Chandragupta to win the Punjab region about 322. The following year, as the emperor of Magadha and the ruler of Punjab, he began the Mauryan Empire.
He built the Mauryan Empire at the age of 22.
After Chandragupta Maurya, his son Bindusara started to rule from 298 BC. He was called as "Amitraghata", the Sanskrit word telling that Bindusara is the "slayer of enemies"
Chandragupta built an empire ranging from the Himalayas and the Kābul River valley in the north and west to the Vindhya Range in the south. Its continuation for at least two generations is attributable in part to his establishment of an administration patterned on that of the Persian Achaemenid dynasty and Kautilya's political text, Arthashastra.
