Did you know that energy can be found all around us?
Nature of Energy
Energy can be either, mechanical, chemical, nuclear, light (electrical), or in gravitational form.
Energy is only transferred
This carnival ride goes from Potential Energy to Kinetic Energy. This an example of a transfer of energy. Wheeeeeeeeeee!
Potential Energy
The position this mechanical ride is in, is a good example of Potential Energy. The ride has stored energy that is at this moment not being used.
Mechanical Energy
This car is an example of Mechanical energy, that contains both Potential energy and kinetic energy. Right now the energy is in Potential mode, but once I start the car and drive away, it will be in Kinetic energy mode. Let's ride...!!!!
Kinetic Energy
Here I am Just standing on the field. I have Potential Energy.
But here I am walking on the football field. I have Kinetic Energy.
The Pulley Example
Here I am at home getting ready to pull this box up with with my "stored" Potential Energy.I better be careful, or the box will tumble down the stairs!!!Yiiiikeeesss!!!
Tug a War. Kinetic Energy v. Gravitational force.
Man ! This box is HEAVY!! I can't hold it!! Gravitational forces are pulling it down!!
Gravitational Force wins.
Oops! The gravitational force was too much for me to handle. The box was heavy and I did not have enough potential energy to transfer into Kinetic Energy. I should have measured how much energy I needed.Dad is going to kill me!!
Measuring Energy
So, according to my dad's computer, I need to use the formula W=F*D to figure out how much energy I needed to pull the box out of the attic
Energy can be found everywhere in our lives.-1-
Energy is everywhere
So you see energy is everywhere. I think I am going to use some of my Joules up from all of my Potential energy that I have stored and go for a swim in my pool.
Energy can be found in many different forms, such as mechanical, chemical, nuclear, light and gravitational.-2-
In science, energy is neither created nor destroyed but rather just transferred from one form to another. This is known as the Law of Conservation of Energy.-3-
Potential Energy is energy such as mechanical energy, stored energy or energy caused by its position. Or in layman's terms, stored energy that is waiting to be used.-4-
Mechanical Energy is the sum of both Kinetic and Potential energy in an object that is used to do work. In this example above, the car will take Ayden home.-5-
Kinetic Energy is the energy of motion, that can be observed as the actual movement of an object (in this case Ayden walking on the field).-6-
Here Potential Energy will be transferred into Kinetic Energy by using a mechanical pulley to pull the box up and out of the attic -7-
Ayden tries to hold on to the box, using all of his Potential and Kinetic Energy.-8-
Ayden wonders if measuring the amount of energy he needed to move the box would have helped move it safely and defeat the gravitational (pulling down) force.-9-
The formula to use to Measure energy is W=F*D. W=work, F=force, D=distance (in meters). So W=F(10 newtons) times D(3 meters) = 30 n-m of Joule (energy) to move.-10-
Energy is not only transferred from one form to another it can also help us complete our tasks in our everyday life-11-
