Text z Príbehu

  • I am a Cyclops and I was tending my sheep, until Odysseus and his crew mates arrive onto my island. Odysseus, advised by his crew to steal my goods quickly and leave, becomes curious about the inside of my cave. He and his crew members walked inside.
  • I lift the rock to prevent the men from leaving, so I can ask questions: "'Strangers,' . . . 'who are you? And where from? What brings you here by seaways---a fair traffic? Or are you wandering rogues, who cast your lives like dice and ravage other folk by sea?'" (Homer 197-200). The leader says his name is Nohbdy, and I greet him and the crew, as a Cyclops would.
  • I became hungry and started to eat Odysseus's men. I caught two "squirming puppies" and "beat their brains out, spattering the floor" (Homer 234-235). Then I devoured them whole; I must say, that was quite a delicious meal. I continued to eat the men, day after day, until one day, I drank too much of Odysseus's wine and fell asleep drunk.
  • As I fell into deep slumber, I woke up to find that Odysseus and his men had stabbed me in the eye. I "bellowed. . .clawing his(my) face. . ." (Homer 345-346). I howled in pain, "Nohbdy's tricked me, Nohbdy's ruined me!" (Homer 358-359). However, I knew that Odysseus would not be able to leave the cave because my big boulder blocked the entrance, so I he was eager to plan his death.
  • The next day, I had to let my sheep out to graze. I dragged the large rock aside and checked each sheep by touch. However, each touch was not accurate as my "blind hands blundering never found" the Odysseus and his crew (Homer 395). I was a little suspicious because the leader of the ram left last, but I didn't think much of it.
  • After I realized that Odysseus and his crew had escaped with the sheep, I called my father, Poseidon. I wanted revenge, so I said. "'. . .if I am thine indeed, and thou art father: grant that Odysseus, raider of cities, never see his home. . ." (Homer 485-487).
