One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" by Rod Sterling is that Mankind Is It's Own Worst Enemy. For example, the first couple of pages in the book were just them freaking out and being really scared. and once Les Goodman's car suddenly started working, they all started pointing fingers at him. Another example is that when a shadow figure appeared, Charlie got really scared and shot the mystery figure without thinking. Once they all found out that the person that was shot was Pete Van Horn, they all started pointing fingers at Charlie and started to get violent. The Last Example, is that when the aliens were watching over maple street, they see all the havoc and destruction that all the residents in maple street are doing and they were all violent for no reason because the power went out because a couple of aliens were testing out a power remote to see what reactions they can get from the humans.
