Mary Gadson was going to Sixteenth Street Church but in order to find out about meetings, she would listen to Shelley on the radio in the morning.
She found out the meeting was during school so she chose to participate, eleven hundred took action to leave Samuel Ullman High School.
The big group was supposed to march downtown but they were never able to make it because the police stopped them. Bull Conner(police man) had dogs ready to be unleashed and water hoses to attack the innocent people.
Mary Gadson was able to run away but she was hosed down and almost bitten. Many other kids were arrested and sent to jail.
She made it home and told them about the march, Mary told her mother that Bull Conner arrested kids and she got away. Mary's mom told her dad and he just shaked his head.
Mary Gadson talks about how Bull Conner was just like his name, a bigot a racist. She thought of him surrounded by fire, the old men had a cold heart she said. He's important because even thought he was a horrible person, it made Mary want to fight even more agaisnt people like him.
