Text z Príbehu

  • I love you beyond all other matter.
  • My dearest daughters, how much do you love me?
  • My dear father, you surpass all other joys.
  • Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave/ My heart into my mouth. I love your Majesty/ According to my bond, no more no less (I.i. 93-95).
  • There is no bond left between us, I disown you.
  • You are insane to reward the flattery of your older daughters
  • How dare you attempt to say that I am wrong.
  • King Lear announces that he intends to divide his kingdom between his three daughters. Lear asks each of his daughters to declare their love for him. The daughter who expresses the most love will receive more of his kingdom, on the basis that they love him the most. Lear's request results in flattery from Goneril and Regan.
  • Edmund the base/ Shall top the legitimate; I grow; I prosper (I.ii 20-21).
  • ---------- Edgar
  • How dare my legitimate son go against me.
  • Lear turns to Cordelia, who is his favorite child, for her response. Cordelia speaks truthfully, unlike her sisters, and states that she cannot love Lear with her whole heart. King Lear is infuriated with this answer and disowns Cordelia.
  • Very well. Lear will be eager to leave in no time.
  • Put on what weary negligence you please/ You and your fellows. I'd have it come to question (I.iii. 13 -14).
  • The Earl of Kent who has served Lear faithfully for many years, disagrees with the king’s actions and fears that Lear might be unstable. Kent tries to convince Lear not to disown Cordelia. Lear's anger causes him to banish Kent and threatens death if he is not gone within six days.
  • He will never know that it is me Kent.
  • Follow me; thou shalt serve me. If I like thee no worse/ after dinner, I will not part from thee yet (I. iv. 38-39).
  • Edmund, the son of Gloucester, recognizes he is treated unequally since he is an illegitimate son and Edgar is not, since he is legitimate. Edmund devises a plan to take part of Gloucesters estate by writing a fake letter as Edgar. In the letter, Edmund frames his brother Edgar for wanting to kill their father.
  • King Lear is staying with his daughter Goneril and brings his knights along with him. Goneril complains to her steward Oswald about Lear and his knights' riotous behavior. Goneril wants Lear out of her castle, so she orders Oswald to be ignorant of both the knights and Lear's requests.
  • Kent is devastated by the fact that Lear banished him from his kingdom. In order to come closer to Lear once again, Kent disguises himself and plans to convince Lear to let him be his servant. While Lear is with his knights, Kent approaches in his disguised form and explains that he is a very honest fellow. Lear does not see past Kent’s disguise and obliges.
