- One day, two hunters brought a woman from the woods named Sogolon to King Maghan. Sogolon was very ugly. However, the hunters said that it was prophesied that if King Maghan marries this woman, their son would be the greatest ruler of Mali. Maghan accepts and marries Sogolon.
- *Tries to make Sundiata mad*
- Pffft. Nice try, woman. Not falling for that.
- King Maghan and Sogolon marry, fall in love, and have a baby named Sundiata who cannot talk or walk. Eventually, Sundiata talks and is given a griot to record his sayings and words. King Maghan's first wife, Sassouma, is very jealous when he names Sundiata his heir. Sassouma and her son treat Sundiata very badly.
- Sundiata is given a walking stick by a griot and he miraculously stands.
- Eventually, King Maghan dies and his nobles make Sassouma's son king. Sassouma tries to put a curse on Sundiata but fails when he does not get angry.
- Sundiata and his mother eventually leave the kingdom. His mother protects him while he grows up in the wild.
- Sundiata organizes smaller kingdoms together and fights Sassouma and her son. The new kingdom is named Mali. He takes the title “Mansa,” or king.
