In the story known as The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling, there are a lot of good themes in it but I think the best one for this is that violence is never the right answer. This theme is expressed in many ways with everyone succumbing to the act of violence making them tear each other apart and there is much evidence and back up. First of all, one of the main protagonists Charlie, shoots a man in fear because the residents of Maple Street could be an impostor(82-83). The person he shoots is actually his neighbor who just went to check the power and he was in a dark area so Charlie shot him with his other neighbors (Don Martins) shot gun. After seeing the victim of the shooting Charlie is sad and embarrassed by taking a mans life when he could have asked who it was but he refused and went for the kill. This could have been solved in many more rational ways but Charlie took the side of violence. Next, another immoral act of violence is when Steve gets punched after he says that everyone is acting hysterical which sets off a chain reaction of violence(85). When others could have talked to him rationally and even a shout would be more calm than the violence that ended up happening so that ended up being most likely a climactic fight between good allies and friends. Finally ,another thing that supports this is that the goal of the villains or the Aliens has fallen into their hands(86). This has never once been a good sign throughout world literature. To be more specific The aliens test the residents of maple street on how unique they are compared to other places yet sadly all the others have sadly suffered the same unfortunate fate of them tearing each other apart and the fact that the antagonists won was also emphasizing the fact that the residents of Maple Street and quite possibly the world have taken the path to violence when they could have taken the path to peace and rational solutions. We also do not have the intentions of the aliens known, so we have no idea whether they could commit an act of war with this research or if they could make a peace treaty with the humans but the problem with that is that there intentions are unknown so we can only wonder what atrocities they could commit . From the many themes of this story I think this one becomes more relevant because there can always be a path to peace that will not hurt you as much as the sad and disgusting path of violence.
