Hi! I am Rachel Carson! I am a marine biologist, zoologist, and an author!!
In 1958, I received an interesting letter. The letter was describing how birds were dropping from trees. In the letter, the person blamed it on DDT. I was unsure what DDT was and went to investigate.
In 1962, I publish all my findings in my book called Silent Springs. In my book, I wrote about the misuse of chemicals in the wild. One of my most significant findings was that DDT passed on from one organism to another through all parts of the food chain. In fact, the DDT entered the food that humans eat all from spraying it on the crops.
Some people didn't think that I had the proper education to write books like this but I sure did! I began my career at John at John Hopkins University studying. I also balanced my studies with a part time job. Unfortunately my collage career ended shorter than expected due to ill family members.
I found a part time job with the Bureau of Fisheries. While I was there, I wrote segments on marine biology. After a while working there, I became the second women ever to be hired by the Bureau. As a result of my work, the United States created the Environmental Protection Agency and the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. Unfortunately, I did not get to see these organizations or the environmental revolution caused by my work since I died in 1964.
Did you know that DDT was used during WWII to protect crops from insects. This also protected soldiers from insect-borne diseases. After the war, this was routinely sprayed to fight pests. At that time, the US had no knowledge that DDT was getting into the food we eat.
