Native Americans are ripped from their ancestral lands and are relocated to less hospitable locations. Native Americans were tricked and forced to sign worthless treaties and received a very little remuneration for their lands. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 enables the President to negotiate with tribes. By 1850, 100,000 Native Americans have been relocated. The forced removal of the Cherokee along the Trail of Tears results in 4,000 deaths.
The wholesale destruction of the Native American Culture begins.
Jacksonian Era
Native Americans are "stuck" on reservations where there are few job prospects and educational opportunities. There is increased violence against women and children on Reservations. There is a housing crisis on many reservations. Oftentimes, the available housing is substandard and overcrowded. Healthcare is underfunded and Native Americans' lifespan is five years shorter than the average American (Allison-Burbank, 2016).
Native Americans continue to be neglected and denied equal access to housing, healthcare, law enforcement and education.
