Queen Elizabeth gave Sir Walter Raleigh the right to claim land in North America.
Yes!!
You have the right to claim land.
Sir Walter Raleigh told his men to go to the Americas and find suitable land for a colony His men came back with enthusiastic reports
Go find land!
In 1585, Raleigh sent settlers to a place called Roanoke island to start a colony. But the English burned villages and killed natives, when the natives would not listen to them.
The colonists gave up and went back to England after a long, hard, winter and many issues with natives.
Raleigh gave Roanoke another chance in 1587, and sent 91 men, 17 women and 9 children to the New World. John White was appointed governor of Roanoke. His daughter who also came to Roanoke, had a child, who was the first baby born in the New World.
Two months after returning to Roanoke, the colony began to run out of supplies, so, John White had no choice but to go back to England once more.
White told the colonists to leave a secret message if they went anywhere, and to leave a cross if there had been trouble.
When White got to England, England was warring with Spain. Queen Elizabeth couldn't give him any supplies because she needed them for the war. Therefore, it took White three years to get back to Roanoke colony
Meanwhile, back at Roanoke, the colonists were completely out of supplies. They decided to move to Croatoan island, and live with the friendly Croatoan Indians. They left a secret message on a tree: CROATOAN, so White would know they had gone to Croatoan island.
CROATOAN
When John White finally returned to the colony, there was no one there. The only clue was a tree with the word CROATOAN carved into it. He couldn't go investigate though, because there was bad weather. So, no one saw the Roanoke colonists again.
