- After Andy and Melinda had been in the woods for a little while, Melinda crys, "We were on the ground. When did that happen? 'No.' No I did not like this. - When stuck in the closet with Andy, Melinda screams, "'NNNOOO!!!' I follow the sound, pushing off the wall, pushing Andy Evans off-balance, stumbling into the broken sink. He curses and turns, his fist coming, coming. An explosion in my head and blood in my mouth. He hit me. I scream, scream" (Anderson 194).
- On the last day of school in the art room, Melinda exclaims, "I hand over the picture. He takes it in his hands and studies it. I sniff again and wipe my eyes on my arm. The bruises are vivid, but they will fade" (Anderson 198).
