Acadian men were brought into the church to be told they need to sign the Oath of Allegiance to the British King, but they refused. The Acadians expected consequences.
The Expulsion of the Acadians Sept.5, 1755
You must sign this Oath.
No, we won't sign! We shall remain neutral and continue our ways of life.
I have to go warn Marie and the kids
Marie! Marie! They tried to make us sign another oath but I refused.
I'm not sure, but expect anything at any time.
What will happen now?
Shortly after Barre, the Acadian father got home, British soldiers showed up and told this family they needed to pack everything they could carry and get on the ship.
We're here to burn your house! Go get everything you need now!
I think I got everything we'll need!
The Acadians were escorted to ships that would take them away to other British colonies, so they said their goodbyes to other families.
Get on this ship over here. Your house has been burned so there's no reason to come back.
Many families were separated when put on ships. 5,000 Acadians died from sickness. This family was being departed to the Caribbean.
