  • Scene 1: Layoff
  • Scene 2: Socio-Economic Family Challenges
  • I need to use the Ipad!
  • Scene 3: Food Insecurity
  • the shelves are so empty.. I can't afford the more expensive products...
  • Harman is a young mom who was abruptly laid off from her job as a server when the pandemic forced most restaurant, retail and service industries to close.
  • Scene 4: Wealth Inequality
  • Since her job didn't provide paid sick leave or vacation time that she could use, she wants to find another job. However, with schools switching to online learning and a lack of affordable daycare options, she has to stay home with her kids. She's trying to balance online learning, but with only one iPad for both kids, it is very difficult.
  • Scene 5: Definition of Poverty
  • Mom I need help!
  • Harman uses her very limited savings to purchase the necessities like rent, bills, and food. Since people with more means panic shopped and over purchased all the basic items, there are less affordable options for her to purchase. She gets what she can, however for the first time ever she accesses the local food bank, which saw an increase of 70% in new clients during the first month of the pandemic.
  • Scene 6: Social Mobility
  • YES please!
  • Harman relaxes that evening by watching the news and sees that while everyone in the world is mandated to stay home and not travel, the Kardashians were able to rent a private island which they flew to in their private jet. Although they didn't break any laws, Harman can't help but feel they broke a social norm that was immoral and reminded her of the extreme wealth inequality and what opportunities wealth provides..
  • That would sure be nice right now...
  • The isolation and lack of social connection is starting to make Harman feel more depressed but she reminds herself how grateful her family is to still have access to the "bare essentials" like food and shelter. However, it makes her think about what the actual definition of poverty is, and if the MBM approach combined with Canada's poverty reduction strategy will help compress the wealth inequality gap and even out the Gini index among households.
  • I wonder what will change?
  • The next norming, Harman receives a call from one of her "regulars" at the restaurant who is a manager of Covid-19 Operations with the government. She offers Harman a work-from home position that will help with contact-tracing. She gratefully accepts and is relieved that this social capital provided this opportunity for intragenerational social mobility!
