The rivalry between the Native Americans and British increased after France's defeat, and a Native American Chief, Pontiac captured a fort and other outposts. The same year the battles began, Britain's King George declared that the colonists could not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. While this lowered the conflict with the Native Americans, the colonists started to distrust the British. The British government also started to tax the colonists due to financial troubles.
