- Scout and Jem lived in Maycomb Alabama. The town was a tired rainy, and hot town. Everyone knew everyone there. It was a rural county with a lot of farming. Scout and Jem's Dad, Atticus, was a lawyer. They made a sufficient amount of money for the time and were able to afford a cook, Her name was Caprina. She would always yell at Scout and Jem to come back to the house for dinner when they played outside, and scold them for doing wrong things.
- "Kids get home now for dinner!"
- "But we ain't finished playing yet!"
- One day, when Scout and Jem were playing outside, they heard noise coming from their neighbor's house, and met a younger boy nicknamed Dill. He was there for the summer, and Scout, Jem, and Dill would play together throughout the summer.
- "I'm Charles Baker Harris, but folks call me Dill. I can read."
- "How old are you, four and a half?"
- Scout and Jem are afraid of the Radley house, because they only see Mr. Radley go in and out, and he doesn't talk to anyone. They also heard frightful stories about Boo Radley stabbing Mr. Radley.
- Jem was dared by Dill to run up and touch the front steps as a joke, but Jem was really scared but didn't want to seem like a coward.
- "Well go on, Scout and me's right behind you."
- "I'm going! Hush!"
