Hi, my name is Mena and i will be sharing my story with everyone how i experienced racial disremation at my new school and how to overcome these challenges by communicating with a wide range of relevant skills, strengths and strategies which young indivduals can use to challenge racial discrimination. I will also be talking about the behaviours and feelings which i felt being faced with racial discrimination.
Go back to your country, no one wants you here
Before i start my story i would like to say what racial discrimnation is. Racial discrimination is when someone treats you unfairly, including the following; bullying you, because of your skin, skin colour, nationality or ethnic background.
Maybe she was just joking around with me right?
It all started in 9th grade, it was my first day at my new school, at the time I didn't know anyone at my new school. I was just considered as the new kid around my grade.
*Smiles and waves at the student*
It was break time, I was playing in the courts as I witnessed someone push me during break time at the courts and when I turned around to see who it was, the individual had said, “Go back to your country, no one wants you here.” The people around her laughed at the foolish comment. I was very confused for the rest of the day as to what she meant as I thought I was in my country.
I would eventually forget about it thinking it was a random one-off event. I thought of it as a normal thing to happen to students who are new to school. I didn't think much about it.
The next morning I was heading to my first period class and as I was waiting for my teacher to appear in class, the same girl who I encountered yesterday who pushed me during break time at the courts and told me to go back to my country was seated behind me. I smiled at her and waved and as i was about to make a friendly introduction she gave me a glare and started asking me questions which made me feel uncomfortable.
