Mao's plan involved a dramatic increase in the demand for crops, so much so that farmers began giving away a portion of their rations to make the quota
Letter to Mao
Once he saw that his plan had been successful thus far, Mao began pushing for an even greater quota. Farmers were now giving most of their rations away as well as melting down a good amount of the iron and copper that they could get their hands on.
Mao's resignation
Within months of this project, signs of depletion were being shown. Farmers in smaller cities were not getting their scheduled meals for days on.
Hoorah!
In the middle of 1959, at a Lushan conference- a letter addressed to Mao Zedong was discovered outside. In it, a collection of ideas on the negative effects of the Great Leap Forward was discovered. This letter addressed the worsening famine as well as the dip in production which was the very thing they were trying to increase.
As of April 27,1959, Mao Zedong was no longer State Chairman but in fact remained CCP Chairman. The ongoing responsibilities were ceded to Lui Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping.
Years after this tragedy, Lui and Deng still worked not only to negate the effects but to prevent the mistakes made by Mao. Medals and awards were given, ceremonies for the dead were held, and those who are able to continue to spread awareness of that day.
