- Madame Loisel was always unhappy because she dreamed of luxurious meals, pretty dresses, jewels, etc, but she was never wealthy enough. One day, Madame Loisel's husband came home with an envelope, which stated that the couple was invited to the ministry. He expected her to be exhilarated, but she just became upset because she felt she had nothing to wear.
- Monsieur had spent all his money he had saved up to purchase a gun, to buy Madame her perfect dress, she was grateful for the dress, but felt she needed jewels.
- Madame Loisel went to her friend Madame Forestier's house, who was very rich. She asked if she could borrow a necklace for the night. Madame Forestier gave her the most beautiful necklace she has ever seen.
- Madame Loisel went to the ministry looking the most beautiful out of any of the women there, she was the happiest she had ever been. But, after the long night, she had lost her friends diamond necklace!
- The couple, after a week, had found a jeweler who could replace the necklace with almost an exact replica. It costed 40,000 franks. The couple had to play 18,000 from their saving, and borrow the rest.
- Madame Loisel and Monsieur had spent 10 years paying off all of the money for the diamonds. They both worked so hard, they were completely and utterly exhausted. Madame had later confessed too her friend whom she borrowed the diamonds from that she had lost the necklace. only to find out the necklace was only worth 500 franks.
