One stormy day, when D'Arcy McGee bent down to open his door to his boarding house, he got assassinated by a mysterious figure.
40 Irish Canadians were immediately arrested, but Patrick Whelan was the one evicted in court because apparently a police officer in the cell heard him say ''I shot the fellow, I shot him like a dog'', and he had the same gun that was used to assassinate McGee with a bullet missing.
wha--
''I shot him like a dog''
In the courthouse, Patrick Whelan was very calm. He had his feet on the table and was chomping on an apple, because it seemed like it was basically gauranteed he was going to win the case with the evidence he has
He laughed at the fake witnesses, like the policeman from earlier, and a man that stated that he tried to sell his pistol six weeks ago. People very suspicious that someone bribed the witnesses
His response to having one bullet missing in his gun is that 2 girls he was partying with had the gun and one accidentaly shot another in the arm.
In the end, Patrick Whelan was sentenced to death. John A. Macdonald rushed the trial in court, it was almost as if he wanted Patrick Whelan to die. Patrick Whelan was enraged by this.
An arguable theory of what happened is that John A. MacDonald actually hired an assassin to kill D'Arcy McGee, because he was against the British ruling Ireland, so John A. MacDonald got worried the British might do do something to Canada and its people. It is also believed that the judge, and the witnesses were bribed by John A. MacDonald, So he could hang Patrick Whelan as soon as he can.
