  • Differences Between the North and the South Before the Civil War
  • The North's economy was industrial, meaning it used factories to mass produce goods.
  • The North also had a larger population, and lived in large cities that were home to many factories.
  • Free Slaves Welcome
  • The final and most obvious difference was slavery. The Northerners were slave owners very rarely, and many people opposed it for moral and economic reasons. Often, escaped slaves would flee to the North and become free.
  • The South's economy, on the other hand, was dependent on plantations, large farms that used slaves to produce cash crops like cotton and tobacco.
  • In contrast, the Southerners lived in large, often luxurious homes in small towns.
  • In the South, it was sadly believed that slaves were property, and they were enslaved and treated terribly. The southerners were constantly afraid that the northerners in Congress would try to take their slaves.
