- In the first scene we are introduced to Antonio who is in a melancholic mood . Salarino and Salanio, his friends give various reasons for his sadness and tries to bring him out of it.Bassanio his closest friend asks Antonio for a loan to woo the wealthy Portia who lives in Belmont. Antonio's ships are still at sea and he has no ready cash with him , but he authorises Bassanio to use his name for credit and get a loan from Shylock, the Jewish Moneylender.
- Launcelot is introduced and decides to leave his master and enters in Bassanio's service.Jessica,Shylocks daughter is ashamed of him and decides to steal his money and marry Lorenzo.Bassanio with Launcelot and Gratiano leaves for Belmont
- Antonio's ships are wrecked. Bassanio is ready to choose the casket for Portia's hand in marriage and chooses the right one.Shylock gives his order for Antonio to be taken into custody
- After Shylock leaves, the duke invites Portia, still in the disguise of a young lawyer, to dinner. Instead, Bassanio offers to find the most valuable ring in Venice, but Portia remains firm, and demands the trifle or nothing.
- Portia is disguised as a young doctor named Balthazar and through a clever argument saves Antonio . At the end half of Shylock's fortune is taken and he must convert to Christanity.
