Stella, for her entire life past the point where she leaves Desiree, lives knowing she can't tell anyone at all who she really is. The following quote is an example of Stella's fear: "She was terrified of being discovered, but almost more afraid that she wouldn't be" (Bennett 207). This quote shows how passing for white has changed Stella's life, and how she longs to have the chance to be herself again, but is still deeply horrified of that idea.
Who do they like or dislike?
The only person Stella feels that she can even slightly open up to is Loretta: "All summer, she waited for Loretta's phone calls" (Bennett 196). Stella frequently speaks with Loretta over the phone and in person, and unbeknownst to Loretta, it's because Stella knows she can relate to her.
