- Light Yagami, a university student, discovers a book of killing: "Death Note". The Death Note kills by a person writing the full name of the person meant to die and keeping their face in mind so others with the same name aren't harmed

- Light believes the book is a prank and decides to leave it, which soon changes after he decides to give it at least one try outside of a convenience store in order to help a girl in trouble, it worked

- Ryuk is a god of death that owns the notebook, he gave it to Light so that he can experience something interesting after a long time. He explains the rules and other deals of the Death Note. Ryuk cannot be seen by anyone that has not touched his Death Note.

- Light is now determined to rid the world of crime and evildoers with no mercy. He kills criminals he sees on news broadcasts with heart attacks within 40 seconds of writing their names in the book.

- The most talented detective: L (fake name), is hired when a pattern is found between a lot of criminals dying because of the same reason. L is able to narrow it down from the whole world down to Japan, down to a student within the first day.
- Even after being so close to being found out Light continues, this time more determined to kill anyone that comes in his way, especially L. He kills and tries to find L's name and hidden face. He is unsuccessful many times.
