The U.S. Supreme Court's 1896 decision in Plessy v. Ferguson ruled that the Jim Crow laws should be obeyed. It stated that separate but equal were constitutional.
Effective today, it is mandated that all races must use separate facilities.

Schools were segregated as well. White and black children had separate buildings, teachers, etc... The black schools were under resourced and did not provide the same level of education. This did not end until the Brown vs Board of Education in May of 1954.
