IEP MEETING
Before reading Gina’s story, I had never heard of Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome. It is sad to hear that the doctor suggested Professor Mirabella to give up. “I’m not going to give up. I will learn what I need to be one step ahead of Gina and help her!” This makes me understand how great the power of a mother’s love is.
After reading Professor Mirabella’s story about Gina’s diagnosis with Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome, I love that Professor Mirabella said that Gina is an individual with purpose, meaning, feelings, desires, and SLOS. It makes us connect with Gina’s situation.
IEP meeting. As a teacher, I want to help parents as Professor Mirabella shares their stories first. And helping parents to share their voice and thoughts in IEP meetings. Give advice to parents for their children after school and at home. Also, ask them what they think that it might work for their child in the classroom about the learning environment and teaching instruction.

Secondly, I would help parents by having conferences or meeting them weekly. So, I will create a students’ weekly progress. I will meet and show every parent what things they need to help students at home. And discussing what would make learning and growth easier for individual students. Also, showing students’ progress and growth to parents.
Then, I will encourage parents to share their voice with other parents who are in a similar situation. So that parents can discuss what difficulties that they have, other parents might solve their problem easily. It also helps parents feel that they are not alone. We are in a big family.
Lastly, I will recommend parents to use technology. There are many accessible technology applications that allow teacher and school use to communicate with parents. Also, allow us as a teacher to understand out of school. Like Professor Mirabella did, parents can record a video log for their children, like a journal.
