- There once was a lame girl of two syllables, named Kira, who mourned the loss of her mother, Katrina. Kira was now an orphan because her father was killed by the beasts when he went on a hunt. The town laws called for four days in the Field of Leaving, beside the body of passed loved ones. Once it had been four days, Kira headed back to what remained of her burnt cott.
- On her way back into town she ran into her tyke friend, Matt, and his dog, Branch. While talking to him she learned that one of the towns most respected women, Vandara, wanted to have Kira's land. Kira knew that she didn't have any choice but to head home and hope for the best. When Kira got to her cott she was cornered by Vandara and her gang of mighty mean moms. Only by agreeing to go before the Council of Guardians did Kira have a chance at keeping her land.
- The Council of Guardians choose to give Vandara Kira's land. In return they give Kira a job restoring the Singers Robe, just as her mother had done before her. Kira was to retrive her belongings from what was left of her cott and return back to the Edifice to see her new home.
- After receiving her belongings from Matt, he and Branch went with Kira to see her new home. Matt had wanted to make sure Kira would be okay. While doing all of this Kira couldn't stop thinking about how her defender, Jamison, had been there when her father was taken. Kira also learned that an old women, named Annabella, would teach her the art of dyeing. Kira decided that she would go to see her the next day.
- After meeting Annabella, Kira started to go to Annabella's more often. Thomas the Carver, whom she had met earlier, was writing the names of the plants down for her as she learned them. One day, as she headed to Annabella's she, Kira, thought she heard one of the beasts. However, when she voiced her concern to Annabella, Annabella just said that there weren't any beasts. When Kira brought this up to Jamison he brushed her off. Telling her that there were indeed beasts and she should always be cautious, reminding her of what happened to her father. The next day, however, she learned that Annabella had passed away.
