- BY 330, the emperor Constantine, had built a new capital city in Constantinople on the site of greek city Byzantium. The Byzantine empire arose from this site. Constantine had no idea what he was doin but he had created an empire that was a superpower in the making.
- The Byzantine empire reached it's peak under the emperor Justinian. Justinian was and autocratic ruler, or single ruler with complete authority. Justinian made new laws for the Byzantine empire to where citizens obeyed laws and made the empire a superpower.
- In the area of architecture, Justinian blended Greek, Roman, Persian, and middle eastern styles. The best know structure is the church od Hagia Sophia whose name means "Holy Wisdom". This church is still one of the best known chruches in the world
