Henry II and Thomas Becket were once great friends. They were such good friends that Henry decided to make him chancellor. Their trust grew until Henry thought that Becket was the best person for his plan.
Henry wanted power over the punishment system but the church was getting in his way. He decided to make Becket Archbishop of Canterbury, therefore he could take more control over the church through Becket.
However this did not go to plan. becket had always been very loyal to whoever he was serving, so when he was made Archbishop he was loyal to god. He didn't follow Henry's orders and they began to argue.
For years they arguing continued until Henry had had enough. He arrested Becket but he did not listen to him and eventually escaped to France. During this time Becket lost a large number of his supporters.
Finally the two decided to work together but when Becket returned to be the Archbishop he excommunicated lots of bishops sending them straight to hell. This made Henry furious.
Finally on the 29th December Henry was pushed over the edge. He ordered four knights to murder Becket so they went to the cathedral. Some monks tried to get Becket to safety but were unable to protect him. The four knights murdered Thomas Becket and fled into the night.
