- Oedipus asks Jocasta to tell the Shepherd to return and tell him exactly what happened when Laius died. He wants to know the exact story, because it sounds like the time he killed someone where three roads met.
- Hubris
- how could someone be so foolish to marry their own mother.
- Oedipus finds Jocasta's dead body in her room. After taking her body down, he takes a golden brooch from her clothing and stabs his eyes out with it.
- Dramatic Irony
- Oedipus does not know his "parents" Polybus and Merope are not his REAL parents. He argues with anyone who tries to say they are not his real parents.
- Symbolism
- Oedipus believes he found a way around his fate. He thinks he is too smart to fall into his predicted fate to kill his own father and marry his mother.
- Oedipus tells the people if anyone is the killer or knows anything about the killer to speak up. This is dramatic irony because HE is the killer but, he does not know this, only the audience does.
- Oedipus's name is symbolism. It means "swollen foot". This symbolizes him as a child, his ankles were bolted together.
