During this time, the majority India’s people were either Hindu or Muslim. Because of this, there was some tension between the two groups. They fought constantly though over 10,000 of them gathered to Amritsar where they’d fast and pray. The sudden fact that they were getting along alarmed the British and banned the public meetings they were having together.
Amritsar Massacre
As a result, British troops opened fire on the groups for 10 minutes. Around 400 Indians died and 1,200 injured. Due to this unfortunate event, many Indian’s were angered and demanded independence.
India Gains Independence
The Amritsar Massacre led up to Gandhi taking over to lead India to independence. In order to fight back against the British, Gandhi led boycotts, hunger strikes, and marches to peacefully fight for their rights.Gandhi would make his own clothing to wear so that he didn’t have to spend money on cloth which would greatly impact the British. Gandhi didn’t just boycott cloth, but also salt. He lead other Indians in what’s known as The Salt March. It was a peaceful protest against tax on salt and led up to Gandhi’s arrest
After years of imprisonments, while Gandhi was on his way to a political meeting after finally being released, he had been shot three time by a man amongst the crowd. He died instantly as he was old, frail, and skinny from fasting. The man claimed that Gandhi was a traitor to Hindu by his nonviolent acts that he felt only supported Muslims.
About 20 years after Gandhi’s tragic death, war only continued in India. This war that took place in 1971 was one that became most significant in history and led up to Bangladesh being created. It was a time that broke up Pakistan but produced this new nation as a result.
