- Lyddie returns to her cabin and sees a black man named Ezekial. She thinks about turning him in for money or she can stay quiet. This is an example of person vs. self because Lyddie is fighting with herself because she needs the money but she doesn't want to be morally wrong.
- Lyddie is in the tavern and wants to travel to the mill in Lowell. It is raining very hard and the roads are very muddy, so it is taking very long to get to Lowell. Also the coach has gotten stuck in the mud because of all the rain. Even with all the men pushing the coach, they cannot get it out of the mud and Nature's clutches.
- Lyddie has returned to her cabin after being in the tavern and is talking with Ezekial, and she is getting to know him. This shows Person vs. Society because everyone at that time period believed that they could be someone's property.
