  • Take a look at some of the books and documents that influenced our Founding Father as they created our country!
  • English Bill of Rights
  • England was ruled by a king who shared some of his powers with the wealthy nobility. The nobles would carry out the king’s wishes. One day, King John tried to take all the power for himself! The angry nobles fought back. In 1215, they created a document called the Magna Carta that limited the power of the king and protected certain rights for the nobles. The Magna Carta introduced the concepts of limited government, rule of law, and due process.

  • "Without free speech and expression, we have no liberty"
  • ThePilgrims left England in a ship called the Mayflower headed for the Virginia colony in 1620. A strong storm blew the ship off course, and they ended up in Massachusetts. This area was not under the control of the company that sent them, so the Pilgrims were in independent territory. They needed a government—fast! The men agreed to create a new government and to follow its rules. In exchange, they would all protect each other. This is called self-government

  • Noblemen fighting with the king were fed up with working for him with no rights. After a series of civil wars the Parliament won and signed the English Bill of Rights in 1689. This document granted access to bear arms, petitioning the government, a fair trial, and no excessive cruel and unusual punishment.
  • Enough is enough! We will not do your dirty work! We want more rights!
  • In 1720, two British authors published newspaper articles that criticized the king's rule. These articles were sent to the colonies and became very influential to the colonists. These articles gave way to the bill of rights with our constitution. The ideas of were of liberty & freedom of expression.
  • By the 1700s, the colonies and they were fed up with being ruled by the king. Representatives from most of the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia to discussed options for the future. At this time, a journalist Thomas Paine published a pamphlet called Common Sense in 1776. Paine explained the arguments for independence and encouraged citizens to support the fight for independence from Britain. The Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.
