  • Simone starts learning piano at the age of 3 and continued her musical training in the classical style all through her childhood.

  • Simone's high school teacher started a fund for her to attend Julliard. Simone taught piano there as well until she had to move with family in Philadelphia because she could no longer afford the tuition.
  • Nina Simone's Music Career Took Off
  • After being denied admission to a move affordable college because of her race, Simone turned to playing jazz and blues in Atlantic City clubs in the 1950's.
  • The Struggle for Civil Rights Got Worse
  • African Americans were coming back from fighting in the war and still were being heavily discriminated against in the 50's. The struggle of racism and segregation entered the mainstream of American life. Nina Simone decided to make songs with messages of support for blacks. She released her debut album Little Girl Blue during this time. 
  • Under different labels, Simone released many albums from the late 50's to the early 70's. 
  • The Greensboro 4 Sit-In sparked a movement that spread, causing hundreds more people to come sit-in every day, and tens of thousands clogged segregated restaurants and shops across the upper South. The protesters drew the nation’s attention to the injustice, and brutality going on. Many other instances happened after this that pressed the civil rights movement forward.
