- Mathilde thought she was too good for everyone and she felt like she was supposed to be born rich. She only wanted money, jewels, and anything that was expensive.
- Falling Action
- Monsieur Loisel brings Mathilde an invitation to a party, but she doesn't want to go because she does not have anything nice to wear. Her husband agrees to give her 400 Francs to buy a dress, instead of buying a gun that he was saving to buy. Mathilde is still not happy because she has no jewelry.
- Resolution
- Mathilde goes to her friend's house to borrow some jewelry. She picks out a diamond necklace and nothing else. After coming back from the party, Madame Forestier's necklace is gone.
- Monsieur Loisel and Mathilde look for the necklace, but after giving up hope, they get loans to buy an identical one to replace the one that was missing.
- Mathilde and Monsieur Loisel pay off their debt after 10 years. When Madame Forestier sees Mathilde for the first time in a few years, she doesn't recognize her because she looks so worn down and tired. Madame Forestier tells Mathilde that the original necklace was very cheap.
- Oh, my poor Mathilde! But mine was imitation.
