IInterviewer: Hello! Thank you so much for coming on today Jing mei! Now, I'll give a little backstory for people who may not be familiar with you. Jing mei is a Chinese American who has had some conflicts with her mother surrounding being a prodigy and playing the piano. So Jing mei, How do you feel now about your mother forcing you to play piano when you were younger?
Jing mei: Now, I feel like I could have tried harder honestly. Back then I didn't try my best to learn to play the piano and that was because I didn't want to change myself. My mom had brought up multiple times that she wanted me to be a child prodigy. So much, she even tried to make me look like Shirley Temple once, which only resulted in me having a bad haircut.
She always wanted me to change and be this prodigy but I knew that that wasn’t who I was. So her forcing me to play the piano made me not want to try because to me it meant I was giving in and letting her change me. It also made me feel very bad about myself, it felt like she would only love me if i was successful or if i had some type of talent.
