Jumpin' Mable
She's [Kya] more pure and innocent than any of those girls you'd have me go to the dance with... I'm teaching her how to read because people in this town are so mean to her she couldn't even go to school.

There lay a man, flat on his back, his left leg turned grotesquely forward from the kneww. His eyes and mouth wide open.
At the beginning of the story in the 1950s, Kya's family slowly starts to trickle away as Kya's mom and siblings leave to escape their abusive father. They live in a shack in the marsh far away from the town, they are known as marsh people.
At home, Kya opens the newspaper. Inside, there’s an announcement that Chase is getting married to Pearl. As Kya stares at this in disbelief...
Kya's dad leaves and she is left alone to provide for herself. She gets to know Jumpin' and Mable, owners of a nearby shop. She also becomes close with Tate, a boy that teaches her to read and they slowly fall in love. Tate leaves for college and promises Kya he will come back, but he never does.
We the jury find Miss Catherine Danielle Clark not guilty as charged in the first-degree murder of Mr. Chase Andrews.
Fast forward to 1969, Chase Andrews is murdered and is found in the swamp below the fire tower and an investigation is started.
Looking deep inside the cardboard box, he finds something else: the shell necklace that Chase wore until he died. Suddenly, it becomes clear to Tate that Kya did kill Chase, that she perfectly planned the murder by disguising herself on buses and riding her boat on riptides to get to the fire tower in time.
Back in 1967, Chase and Kya are dating and Chase takes Kya to the top of the firetower where he will die in the future. Kya gives Chase a shell necklace that he wore until the day he died. Chase marries another woman while they are together and it breaks Kya's heart, Kya pursues her career as a writer about nature and the marsh. She published her first book in 1968.
Chase and his wife
In 1969, Kya is arrested as a suspect for the murder of Chase Andrews. A big piece of evidence against Kya was that the necklace she gave Chase was taken from his neck when he was killed. In the trial she is found not guilty. She then professes her love for Tate and they spend the rest of their lives together.
Chase's Mom
After Kya dies, Tate finds a box under the floorboards revealing that she had a secret identity where she wrote poems under the name Amanda Hamilton. Tate also finds Chase's necklace that Kya had taken off his neck when she killed him.
