- the play begins with a plague ravaging Thebes. Seeking to end the suffering of his people, King Oedipus sends his brother-in-law, Creon, to the Oracle of Delphi for guidance. Creon returns with the prophecy that the plague will end when the murderer of the former king, Laius, is found and expelled from the city.
- Oedipus vows to find the murderer and bring justice to thebes He question tiresias, the blind prophet, who reluctanly reavels that Oedipus himself is the cause of the plague. Oedipus rejects Tiresias's Creon of conspiring against him.
- Jocasta, Oedipus's wife and mother (though neither of them knows it), tries to comfort Oedipus by telling him that prophecies are unreliable. She recounts how an oracle once predicted that her son would kill his father, but her own child died as an infant. Meanwhile, a messenger arrives from Corinth with news of King Polybus's death, which Oedipus takes as proof that he cannot fulfill the prophecy. However, the messenger reveals that Oedipus is not Polybus's biological son, as he was adopted after being found abandoned as a baby.
