  • William Hobson arrives in Bay of Islands, New Zealand after being sent by the British Crown as Govenor to attempt to convince the Maori of New Zealand to allow the British to colonize New Zealand.
  • 5th February 1840
  • With the help of his secretary, James Freeman William Hobson drew up some notes for the Treaty of Waitangi. These notes were then tidied up and added to by James Busby the British Resident .
  • 6th February 1840
  • After the treaty was written it was given to Missionary Henry Williams and his son Edward to be translated into Maori. They were only given one night to do this as there was a Hui the next day!
  • 3rd September 1840
  • Hui day: Hobson presented his treaty to around 500 Maori invited to Waitangi for a Hui. There was then lively debate about how the treaty would affect their chiefly authority, land and trade. After the day long meeting no agreement was reached.
  • Just one day after the disastrous Hui 40 Maori chiefs agreed to sign the treaty. The first being Hone Heke.As each Chief signed Hobson told them "He iwi tahi tātou" Meaning we are now one people.
  • After travelling all around New Zealand the treaty was singed by the last chiefs. By this point it had been signed by over 500 Maori chiefs from all over New Zealand as well as 13 woman.
